Veterinarians FAQs
-
We don’t charge vets anything for our services. It’s free for the vet.
-
Usually clinics like vets to commit to minimum 3 months, and often they like them to stay for 6 months.
-
We require a minimum of 3 years clinical experience, happy working sole-charge and able to operate surgically on your own (with nurse support). Ideally you would also have some out of hours experience.
-
No! Most clients and all staff speak excellent English. As long as you have great written and spoken English, you will be absolutely fine.
-
The clinics will help to find accommodation close to the clinic, unless you prefer to find your own. The clinics don’t tend to pay for accommodation.
-
Unfortunately, not. The clinics really like consistency, and it takes a while to get the vets used to how the clinics work so the clinics are looking for vets to stay for an initial period of 3-6 months. After this it is possible to return for a few weeks at a time once the vet knows how the clinic works.
-
Yes, you need an EU/UK passport.
It is not possible to work as a self-employed professional (locum/temporary vet) in Scandinavia if you do not hold a EU or UK passport.
It may be possible to apply for permanent positions without a UK/EU passport, but you will then need a work visa (some of our clinics are willing to help with this).
UK vets can work in Scandinavia without a work visa (subject to certain conditions).
-
Yes. As long as you give the clinic plenty of notice (3-4 weeks) then they can manage their rota accordingly. We encourage vets to take breaks and to explore the country they are in.
-
No! The clinics like to know that you are available to work for 3 - 6 months, but this does not mean that you have to work every day! Normally the clinics want the vets to work a 40 hour week = 5 x 8 hour days. But we encourage vets to take long weekends or holidays to explore the country they are in.
-
We require our vets to complete a timesheet for each week of work We then will assist you to create an invoice for the clinic and submit it correctly. The payment terms are usually 30 days from when the clinic receives the invoice.
Clinics FAQs
-
We charge a set commission based on the vets' monthly earnings (contact us for more information).
-
Our vets stay on average between 3-6 months within a year. They are limited to a maximum of 6 months in a year due to tax rules. Shorter periods are possible too, depending on your needs.
-
We suggest a period of 3 months, as its takes time to get all the required paperwork issued for a vet to work in Scandinavia.
-
All our vets will have great written and spoken English. It's not a requirement for our vets to speak the local language.
-
After your clinic signs up to our services, we share with you a selection of vets that fit your requirements. You then review the information that we send you for each vet (CV and clinical skills checklist) and you then contact your preferred candidates via email or telephone to set up a video interview with them.
-
The vets will need a few different documents to legally work in the country. Nordic Locums helps the vets apply for and manage all the required paperwork, so the clinic does not have to.
-
The clinic should help temporary vets to find accommodation that is ideally close to the clinic or easily accessible. Usually, vets are happy to contribute to the cost of their accommodation.
-
Many vets will choose to bring their own cars. If they do not, then it is necessary to make sure they can get safely to and from their accommodation to the clinic either with a hire car, or bicycle (if the accommodation is close by) or by public transport as required.
-
Nordic Locums provide a template timesheet for the vet to complete each week. At the end of each month, the clinic manager signs off all the timesheets and the clinic manager or vet submit them to Nordic Locums. We then check them, calculate their invoice (taking into account accommodation etc) and help the vets to issue invoices to the clinics.
-
This rarely happens due to the process involved prior to the vet starting, but if there is a problem, we will assist you to resolve the situation and if it is not possible to make it work with that vet, we will do everything we can to find a suitable alternative.
