Midsommar in Scandinavia

One for the ‘must-do’ list for anyone living in Sweden.

The Swedes love to celebrate the longest day of the year, known to us as Summer solstice. Midsommer Eve is always celebrated on a Friday between the 19th and the 23rd June and it’s a date to mark in the calendar if you are spending summer in Sweden.

It is one of the most celebrated holidays. You can expect a traditional lunch, served in the garden including the popular Swedish pickled herring, new potatoes, cured salmon and it will most certainly involve drinking schnapps.

Dancing around a maypole with flowers in your hair is really a lot of fun. It’s a very merry day celebrating the season of fertility and it is considered to be a magical time of the year.

The weekend of Midsommer, most Swedes will go to the countryside, to summer homes and smaller towns to celebrate but if you find yourself in a city, just head to your closer public park and you are sure to find a party there. You will most likely be invited to help decorate and raise the maypole and make new Swedish friends along the way.

Another incredible experience to enjoy while living in Sweden - mark the date in your calendar now!
